Access to Weight Loss Injections

Feel Good Suffolk is not a clinical service, so we can’t help individuals to get weight loss medications, either through the NHS or privately.

This page provides information on weight loss medications. You may have heard of these medications being referred to as tirzepatide or Mounjaro®.

Weight loss medications through the NHS

Suffolk residents (excluding Waveney)

In Suffolk, only a special service called the Weight Management and Complex Obesity Service (WMCOS) can prescribe these medicines through the NHS. Your GP cannot prescribe them to you directly for the treatment of obesity.

If you think you need medical help to lose weight, please talk to your GP. They will explain your options and, if appropriate, refer you to WMCOS for further assessment.

Prašau prisiminti:

  • Feel Good Suffolk can’t suggest or recommend weight loss medications.
  • We can’t send a referral to WMCOS for you. This must be done via your GP.

More information can be found here: www.suffolkandnortheastessex.icb.nhs.uk/weightmanagement

Waveney residents

If you believe you meet the NHS criteria for weight loss medications, you should firstly check if your practice is currently prescribing tirzepatide via their website before booking an appointment to discuss this with your GP. If they are not currently prescribing tirzepatide, your GP may advise you to wait until the new community-based service is available (please see below for more information) or may suggest other suitable weight management services in the meantime.

If you don’t meet the eligibility, please don’t contact your GP. They need time to help those that do qualify.

Please be aware:

  • Not all GP practices can offer these medications right now
  • A new specialist support service is being planned by the Norfolk & Waveney Integrated Care Board. This service will be for eligible patients who can’t get the medication directly from their GP practice. This is expected to become available later in 2025.

More information and the eligibility criteria can be found here: Tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) – Weight loss drug – information for patients – Norfolk & Waveney Integrated Care System (ICS

Private weight loss medications

Some people are choosing to buy weight loss medications privately (not through the NHS). If you do this, the provider should:

  • Check if the medication is safe and right for you.
  • Discuss realistic and safe weight loss goals with you.
  • Keep in touch with you to monitor how you’re doing.
  • Offer additional support to help you eat healthy and be active.

Feel Good Suffolk is not a clinical service, so we can’t give advice about side effects or how the medication might affect you. If you have any problems or questions, please speak to your GP or the provider who gave you the medication.

While you’re taking the medication, it’s a good idea to ask your provider if they can also help you with healthy eating, physical activity and lifestyle changes. This is essential to help you achieve sustained weight loss.

Feel Good Suffolk can give general advice on:

  • Making small lifestyle changes

This advice is available to everyone, but it’s not designed for people who are having medical treatment.
